Cartpanda Retry — Payment Retry Attempts in Cartpanda Pay

Cartpanda Retry is a Cartpanda Pay feature that automatically retries charging orders that were declined during payment (for example, due to insufficient funds or other decline reasons).

Its goal is to recover lost sales by increasing the approval rate without requiring any manual action from the merchant.

How it works

When an order is declined in Cartpanda Pay, Retry can:

  1. Identify the order as eligible for retry attempts
  2. Automatically reprocess the charge within a window of up to 3 days after the initial decline
  3. Stop retrying when:
  • the charge is approved, or
  • the 3-day window expires

In practice, this allows the payment to be approved on a second (or third) attempt, when the customer has available balance/credit or when the decline was temporary.

Optional discount (to increase approval chances)

Cartpanda Retry allows you to configure a discount to be applied during retry attempts.

This discount can help to:

  • Increase the likelihood of a successful charge (lower amounts are more likely to be approved);
  • Reduce refunds and chargebacks in scenarios where insisting on the full amount would increase customer friction.

Smart Rules

In addition to the standard configuration, Cartpanda Retry includes Smart Rules, which allow more precise control over Retry behavior.

With Smart Rules, you can:

  • Define rules by cart value range (e.g., apply different strategies for low-ticket vs. high-ticket orders);
  • Configure specific discounts per rule, adjusting the approach to maximize approval without unnecessarily sacrificing margin.

This enables strategies such as:

  • Smaller carts: lower or no discount, prioritizing margin;
  • Larger carts: higher discounts to increase recovery chances;
  • Custom rules to optimize conversion while controlling financial impact.

Key benefits

  • Revenue recovery: increases the approval rate of orders that would otherwise be lost
  • Automation: reduces manual effort to retry failed charges
  • Flexibility: optional discounts to improve conversion and reduce dispute risk

What happens when a charge is approved

If a Retry attempt is approved:

  • the order follows the normal “payment confirmed” flow;
  • the captured amount respects the Retry rules (including any configured discount).

Fee on recovered transactions

All transactions approved through Cartpanda Retry are subject to an additional 1% fee, applied to the final captured amount. This fee is added to the standard Cartpanda Pay fee and is charged only when a retry attempt results in a successful payment.

Orders that are not recovered by Retry do not incur this additional fee.
